What is a Disneyland FastPass?

It's a ticket that holds your place in line for a ride. It lets you leave, go eat lunch,go on another ride or do whatever you want and then come back later and get in a special line that usually dosen't have a wait or has a very short wait..

Sort of like if your buddy agreed to stand in line for you and call your cell when he got close to the entrance.

Some Other things to know about a FastPass:

It's free.
Only certain rides offer FastPasses.
It expires at the end of the day.
You can’t run around and get all your FastPasses at the same time. Your first FastPass tells you when you’re allowed to get another one.

What Rides Offer FastPass Tickets?

These rides usually have FastPasses available. However, they do change, so check the guide you get when you enter Disneyland to be sure.

Special Fast Passes and How to Get Them:

Dream FastPass

A Dream FastPass is a prize randomly given to guests in the park. It's like having one FastPass for every ride at Disneyland (the rides that use FastPass, that is). As you go on each ride, a tab is removed from the pass until you use them all up. The prize is one of many given out as part of Disneyland's Year of a Million Dreams celebration.

Surprise FastPass

Sometimes when you get your regular FastPass, you’ll get a "Surprise FastPass" along with it. This gives you quick entrance onto specific rides or shows, usually something Disneyland is trying to promote.

For example, the "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" show wasn’t very well-attended so they started giving FastPasses away to encourage people to see the show, and now it’s much more popular. You can ask a staff member if any are being offered at the moment.

Here’s How to Get One:

Find the FastPass ticket machine near the line for your ride.
Insert your Disneyland admission ticket
Grab the FastPass that comes out (and your admission ticket). Keep it!
Look at the time printed on the FastPass. You can leave now—but come back after the time shown on your ticket.
For instance, if it’s now 11am, the FastPass may say "Return between 12:30-1:30". This means you can go, and then come back anytime after 12:30 and get in the special shorter FastPass line anytime within that hour. You’ll stand in that line for about 5 minutes, maybe 15 if it’s hugely crowded that day.

Disneyland Fast Pass Secrets

Secret #1: After getting your FastPass tickets, leave the area. Most people who get FastPasses ride the next-closest attraction, so you’ll be waiting in line with all those people you’re trying to get out

Secret #2: You’ll always have to wait at least 40 minutes to return.

Secret #3: You’re usually only allowed to have 1 FastPass at a time. However, there are ways around that. Here’s a good article on beating the system.

Secret #4: The end time printed on the FastPass isn’t really enforced. So if you think you’ve missed your window, go anyway— you’ll most likely be allowed to enter.

Secret #5: Check your FastPass ticket to see when you can get your next FastPass and then get one as soon as you can. This fastpass tip can be really helpful and save you lots of time.

After your time has come then you can go back to that attraction, give your Fastpass to the Cast Member, and enter the Fastpass line. While occasionally you must still wait in a line, it is much shorter than the standby line for the attraction. (Standby line is for those that are not using a Fastpass). Although the Fastpass has a time range to return, you can usually use it anytime after the initial start time.

Since Fastpass is not offered on every attraction, it is important to have a plan when entering Disneyland or Disney's California adventure. Also, you can only have one Fastpass at a time, with a few exceptions. One of those exceptions is that once your window of time has opened, (or 2 hours have passed since obtaining that Fastpass), you may then obtain a Fastpass for a second attraction. This strategy is very useful if it is your intent to ride each attraction, or at least the popular ones. For example, if you already have a Fastpass for Splash Mountain but also wish to ride Indiana Jones, then once your time opens for Splash Mountain go to Indiana Jones, get a Fastpass, and then use your one for Splash Mountain. Keep in mind that all examples are in the singular, but you will need a Fastpass for each person in your party who wishes to ride the attraction (children 3 and under are exempt, but in most cases would not be able to ride the attraction in either case (Autopia is one exception)).

Also, if you wish to ride Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and Splash Mountain, it is a good idea to grab the Fastpass for Splash Mountain or Indiana Jones then ride both Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion while waiting for your Fastpass window to open.

Using Fastpass is very easy, and saves a lot of time waiting in lines, which is a wonderful feature. There is also one downfall, which should be mentioned. When using Fastpass, you skip the bulk of the line on many attractions, or move through it so quickly that you don't see the line itself. For some attractions, the line is very well designed, and worth seeing. One such attraction is Indiana Jones. So, if you wish to see the queue, ride the attraction again after using Fastpass, but choose a time when the queue is not horribly long to enjoy the attraction.
